Ref 1705 - Chateau, 19th Century - Tournus, Burgundy

Living Area: 4,000 sq.ft.. On eight acres—From this promontory the magnificent view over the valley of the Saône to the hills beyond is what made the local notable choose this spot around 1900. He commissioned an architect to design a house both comfortable and convenient. And the result has the astonishing quality of drawing the visitor further and further into the house, making him want to see more, the architectural equivalent of a page-turner, if that doesn't sound disrespectful.

The discreet, almost anonymous entrance gate on the edge of this small village, opens onto an avenue of trees which curves gently up to the house, which, square and tall with a tower breaking its symmetry, has a few steps at its Northern and Southern doors, so raising the living area by just the amount which its dignity requires.

Two large reception rooms with high windows (salon and dining-room) with double-doors connecting them, and across the fine entrance hall with its splendid carved staircase, the kitchen, an office and a pantry.

On the first floor a spacious landing, the main bedroom with its own dressing-room and bathroom, two more bedrooms sharing a second bathroom.

On the second floor, a huge library-billiard room, plus three more bedrooms and another bathroom. The size of the bedrooms is noteworthy, even if the ceilings become slightly less high with each successive storey.

As for the basement level, there is a series of rooms including a boiler room for the oil central heating. The lovely views across the valley are omnipresent in the garden, whether in the walks with their long stone balustrades or in the recently installed swimming pool with its paved terraces on the South side of the house.

A double garage has on one side of it the greenhouse which was certainly built with the house, for the exotic flowers tender plants, and possibly a more down-to-earth vegetable.

Tournus is less than ten minutes' drive, the motorway about fifteen, but the predominant atmosphere of this property in its eight acres of land is peaceful. A welcoming property, with considerable accommodation, in excellent condition, original features preserved in its recent impeccable renovation.
